La Linguere Star Couture

The most fashionable this year!

Aita Carmichael of LaLinguere Fashions/New York

Born and raised in Thies, Senegal, the daughter of an accountant and a housewife.  She arrived in the US at the age of 28 as a Social Worker. While working in the US, she discovered her passion for Fashion Art and Design.  After getting African clothing for her friends in the US and spending much of her time in the garment district looking at fabric Aita decided to perfect the art form at the Harlem Fashion Institute.

After honing her craft, La Linguere Fashions New York was launched on 125th Street in 1998. The brand began solely focused on women’s luxury clothing, with the first collection pulling inspiration from the concept of an elegant woman of fashion. After the success of the women’s collection, a men’s collection was introduced shortly after.

In 2001, a strategic decision was made to refocus the brand. The women’s collection travelled to prestigious Art festivals such as Newport Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, International African Arts Festival/New York, African World/Chicago. It was also taken to a variety of women conferences, conventions and arts exhibit around the country. The beautiful collection shows the aesthetic of Wearable art, drawing inspiration from the Senegalese women of distinction: The Linguere.  Each design is made from unique fabrics and a consistent use of mud cloth from Mali, kente from Ghana, and tie dye and wax print from Senegal.

To date the brand has sold in some of the independent retailers including The Bronze Kingdom (Orlando), Ida’s Idea (Washington, DC) and Salon Inspire Salon and Boutique (Cincinnati OH). The brand has also been featured in fashion publications such as Black Beauty Magazine in London, Malvie Magazine, Raamat, Hilife and D_Mochelle. La Linguere Fashions was a featured designer at the Delta’s fashion show in MD in  2018 & 2020.

Most recently, Romeo Boukoungou from Burkina Faso joins La Linguere Fashions as a partner.  Romeo first learned about tailoring and fashion from his mother’s family the renowned Sankara of Burkina Faso.  He later perfected his craft under the leadership of Africa legendary fashion Icon Pathe’O.  Along with Romeo’s incredible eye for perfection, comes the name change to La Linguere Star Couture.  Much of La Linguere’s success is due to a continuous effort in making unique, timeless bold statement pieces at an approachable price point.

Following the elevated direction of the brand, we look forward to taking our creative spirit to new horizons. Thank you for browsing our site
